# Roto taking forever? Faster AI masks and green screen keys in After Effects, Premiere and Resolve

## Short answer

Match the tool to the shot. If there is no green screen, use the AI mask in your app (Object Matte in After Effects 26.2+, Object Mask in Premiere, Magic Mask 2 in Resolve Studio) and fix its known weak spot with one setting. If there is a green or blue screen, a neural keyer like CorridorKey 2.0 usually beats roto, and it comes as a paid plugin or a free open source version

You can also feed a rough AI mask into CorridorKey as a hint, which helps on messy shots with more than one person

Masking was the loudest pain across the editing subs between 21 and 27 October. A few posts

* "Rotoscoping in the AI age feels so incredibly archaic", about propagating one frame at a time and having to repropagate before a freeze [1]
* "Why is Magic Mask Better actually worse than the regular Magic Mask? It introduces random flickering artifacts" [2]
* An Object Mask in Premiere that left "border residues from the background" with expansion greyed out [3]
* Two CorridorKey 2.0 green screen tests among the top posts of the week in r/AfterEffects [4][5]
* A Resolve user who needed a key that stops at a black outline, like a paint bucket [6]

## Step 1: pick the right tool for the shot

## Step 2: After Effects, Object Matte instead of the old Roto Brush

In After Effects 26.2 the Roto Brush button was replaced by Object Matte. The After Effects team says it selects more accurately and propagates much faster than the old Roto Brush [8]. Adobe describes it as one click AI selection that isolates and tracks the subject [7]

1. Double click the layer to open it in the Layer panel
2. Pick Object Matte and click the subject
3. Let it propagate, then scrub through and add or remove areas where it slipped
4. Freeze the result once you are happy so you stop recalculating it

If you don't like the new edges, you don't have to roll back the app. Adobe staff say the older Roto Brush versions are a version selector in Effect Controls, and one user says version 3 fixed the spiky edges for them [7][8]

## Step 3: Premiere, fix Object Mask edge residue

The residue problem from this week has a simple cause. Object Mask has two modes and you choose one before you make the mask. Smooth is for hair, fur and soft or see through edges, and it doesn't support Mask Expansion. Sharp gives crisp edges and keeps Mask Expansion [9][10]

1. Delete the mask and make it again with the Object Mask tool in Sharp mode
2. Start on a frame where the subject is fully visible, then track [10]
3. Set Mask Expansion to a small negative value to pull the edge in and remove the halo [9]
4. If the subject has hair, stay in Smooth and use its Sharpness control instead [9]

Two traps from Adobe's own page. Don't open a project with Smooth masks in Premiere 26.0, because saving it there can corrupt the mask data. Smooth masks also aren't supported in Team Projects [10]

## Step 4: Resolve, stop Magic Mask Better from flickering

Magic Mask 2 has Faster and Better modes. Better adds Smart Refine and a Consistency control that smooths the edge over time. Consistency starts at 0 and only works once your clicks are tracked across several frames, and pushing it too far can make the edge lag behind the subject [11]

1. Set the quality mode before you track
2. Track forward and backward from a clear frame
3. Raise Consistency a little at a time and watch fast motion for lag
4. For a rough garbage matte, Faster is often enough and runs quicker [11]
5. In Resolve 21 you can also pick Render in Place Magic Mask from the clip's three dot menu once the mask looks right [11]

On Resolve Free, Magic Mask is not available. Power Windows, qualifiers and Fusion masks still work [11]. ## Step 5: green screen, use CorridorKey 2.0

If you shot on green or blue, roto is the slow way. CorridorKey 2.0 is a neural keyer from Corridor Digital. The site lists time awareness to stop flicker, unmixing of see through foreground color, native 4K, HDR and float output, and plugins for every major app on one purchase [12]

The Personal license is one person on up to two machines, with 2.x updates and a 14 day money back guarantee [12]

**The free route.** The same model is on GitHub and Hugging Face [13][14]. Setup is a Python environment, the requirements and a weights download. After that you drag a clip onto the launcher file in the folder and it asks you a few questions. It writes the matte and the foreground, or ProRes 4444 with alpha, or EXR frames [13]. The license lets you use the free version on commercial projects and you own the output. You can't resell it or run it as a paid API, and companies with more than $20 million in yearly revenue need to buy seats [13]

**The combo trick.** Without a hint, CorridorKey decides who the subject is, which can go wrong with two people in frame. Export a quick Object Matte or Magic Mask as a black and white matte and pass it in as a hint video. The README suggests a hint quality of 0.75 for a rough automated hint [13]
